App Store Identity Design

The Brief: Rebrand Catch Phrase for Adults with a new look, new screenshots, and a new app store icon to generate more app installs and in-app purchases.

Context: Lit AF Games came to me after a successful partnership on Ninja Climb in 2018 for this smaller project. They wanted to capture the full potential of their audience with quality store artwork that would put them above the competition and generate new revenue from Catch Phrase for Adults.

Results: The project goal was met and exceeded as app install numbers have skyrocketed since rebranding, the game has pushed its closest competitors out of the top spot when searching for “adult catch phrase” on the app store, and the game has generated more revenue for the creator than it had.

Preliminary Sketches

The project was presented to me as a rebranding project, with that in mind I took the existing ideas that the game relied on and honed them to a razor sharp focus. The idea of a cool, fun party game for your friends with a mischievous “truth or dare” edge was key to capture. The developer asked that I try to incorporate the devil emoji into the design. My perspective led me down a couple of paths, the devil could be trying to get you to play by presenting you with the game on the icon, or it could be interacting with you, shouting a curse-word into the air, and communicating the adults only nature of the game. This led me to adding the 18+ marker, similar to what would be seen on a video game box, or on other pieces of age-gated media.

The Final Icon

The games’ icon drew inspiration from other adult oriented party games while using the visual language of a fun app that is both high quality and ensures audiences will trust the app with their data and money.

Screenshots

One of the key selling points, especially in the iOS app store, are screenshots. Players will see screenshots for the game along with the games icon and the games rating. These screenshots needed to grab attention and quickly communicate the point of the game. I was given general ideas of what to communicate in the screenshots, and with that I wrote copy and paired ideas together to sell the game to the audience that would be most attracted to it.

Focus: Game Modes

Players need to know that this game has multiple styles of play that can support their fun party experiences.

Focus: Content

This game relies upon its content to keep players coming back. The volume of keywords that are included in the game need to be emphasized to generate maximum interest.

Focus: Relevant Topics

We needed to present yet more topics and keywords while informing players that there are modern phrases, internet slang, and memes included. This broadcasts a fun and young adult skewing game that supports the overall messaging of a party game for adults.

Focus: Points and Competition

The competitive nature of the game needed to be emphasized as much as possible, leaving players with the opportunity to show how much they know, and also bring a group together depending on the mode played.
